Breaking News

Irish anglers and tourist anglers we must Unite so have your say on this.

Hi Vincent Waterville is a free lake it was given to the people of Ireland how dare ifI try and introduce new measures they should have no right to set limits this organisation should be disbanded they never help fisheries it’s all negativity by them. Leave currane alone it’s our peoples lough. Simon

Hi Vincent I read your story tonight about the new regulations for Lough Currane I think it’s an absolute disgrace that ifi have introduced these without consultation with the businesses and the local anglers in Waterville, common sense has gone out the window surely they could give anglers at least 1 tag for the spring fishing. I think it’s sending out the completely wrong message its making it look like the anglers are the problem which is so far from the truth. Closing the spring fishing will Be a huge loss to Waterville so many businesses will suffer, Waterville is suffering enough major hotels closed and if these regulations are passed more businesses will fold , I say to ifI please put things right and use a little bit of common sense .save our village and our visitors. John

Hi Vincent I think you should start a petition to stop these regulations ifi have gone too far this time save our fishing. If these regulations are passed I don’t think many licences will be purchased in 2026 and the spring anglers will be lost forever in Waterville. David
Subject: Urgent Appeal on New Lough Currane Regulations

Dear IFI,

I am deeply concerned about the new regulations for Lough Currane. Introducing these measures without consulting local businesses and anglers in Waterville is unacceptable. Common sense has gone out the window.

At the very least, anglers should be allowed one tag for spring fishing. Closing the spring season sends the wrong message—it unfairly portrays anglers as the problem, which is far from the truth.

This decision will have a devastating impact on Waterville. Our village is already struggling, with major hotels closed and businesses barely surviving. If these regulations go ahead, more businesses will fold.

I urge IFI to reconsider, engage with the community

12/10/2025

October 12, 2025. On the final day of the 2025 Salmon and Seatrout season, there were no reports from Currane's C&R Trout anglers. It's widely recognised that this has been the worst season in living memory, made worse by the government's apparent indifference towards the wild heritage of salmon and sea trout—a situation whose causes are well known. All I can say is, perhaps one day, wild geese will return and reclaim the Irish waters. On a personal note, I want to thank the Inland Fisheries team and all my followers on the Salmon and Sea Trout blog and Facebook page. The Currane weather chart showed variable winds, ranging from light to gentle East, then veering ESE, SE, SSE, and back to SE, with good cloud cover throughout. Yesterday's conditions included no rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.2°C, and 5 hours and 6 minutes of sunshine. Additionally, the Salmon and Sea Trout blog received more views this season than ever before—last month alone saw 386,777 views.

Last smolts will be released next spring and hatchery closes. They want all hatchery fish returning to cong to be trapped and killed and dumped. Sorry state of affairs. Just for the record I haven’t had this confirmed by Inland fisheries Ireland.

Waterville boats of watervilleboats@gmail.com reported that the Killarney fly anglers were out trout fishing and caught 20 Brown on the drift then hell broke lose and had to head back in Waterville boats harbour because of thunder and lightning and no the flie. Nowe head for the Salmon Tragedy In Co Cork I was aked to put it up Thanks for updating the press release so promptly this morning. Since then I have discussed the situation a number of times today with our chairman. We have come up with an estimation as to how many are dead or in the process of dying. See below.  THE ESTIMATION IS 46,000. This is the headline figure we have discussed with RTE (Eileen Heron Country Wide RTE Radio 1)today in advance of further interviews tomorrow with Conor and a Biological expert, Dr Ken Whelan and the figure I intend to use when contacting National, International and local media. Helen had no idea before our conversations of the scale of this. I believe that the media last Monday / Tuesday have either been misinformed or misled and that they should be made aware of the full scale of this unmitigated tragedy. I will leave it up to you as to whether you want to include in your press release even with some caveats but it would be really helpful if you could as I believe a headline figure of 46,000 dead fish from a source that neither the IFI or EPA have failed to disclose some 4 days o So the story so far in figures. Thursday evening Lombardstown,  Mallow and killavullen clubs recovered approx 3500 fish from the river blackwater. There was the same volume in the river that were in water too deep to recover. That's approx 7000 fish. There was also the same amount observed still swimming but obviously affected...That'  s 10,500 fish. Allow perhaps 10% for predation from birds etc and it totals over 11,500 fish. This was only covering approx one quarter of the affected stretch which spans some 30km.So, 11,500 x 4 which totals approx 46,000 is the actual number of what has been affected so far....and it is still ongoing.

Sy Bee.The Irish gov banned sea trout re stocking! And it looks like any form of stocking even of salmon has failed as well in this area! Judging by this year’s catches! Something is eating them at sea! I think seals! Salmon farms don’t eat salmon or sea trout! Seals do en mass! Many seals all over Uk ie - less and less sea trout and salmon! I’m sticking to my view that seal are a major cause of sea trout and salmon demise in 2025! Next poachers netting in the sea and rivers! Salmon farms don’t poach and nett wild sea trout and salmon! They pollute the seas

Mr. Bill Bullick shares his observations of Lough Currane. The floor is yours, Bill.

Thank you, Vincent, for your daily updates. I can only imagine how disheartening this must be for you, with both you and your late father having seen Waterville in the good times.  I know conditions aren’t ideal, but Currane is yards from the sea and we should be seeing trout caught every day, with a handful of grilse thrown in. No angler can catch what’s not there and Hell roast the shysters that allowed this to happen to Ireland’s finest seatrout fishery.  Frankly, I’m surprised that anyone is even launching a boat.  Back in 2015, we had some great sport. Not easy fishing I’ll grant you, but I had 4 seatrout and a 7lb salmon for a week. The best trout was just shy of 5lb. The smallest was 3.5lbs. Every year, without fail, Waterville produced specimen seatrout. By 2016 and the expansion of salmon farms, it was all over. I first fished Currane in 1972. It was like Alaska and people came from across the world to the Butler Arms. Changed days.

In local sports, Kerry faced Tyrone in the semifinal at Croagh Park and secured an impressive victory with a score of 1-20 to 0-17, congratulations to the Kerry team and their supporters. Unfortunately, Currane anglers did not experience similar success.

Weather conditions around Currane included variable moderate winds, shifting from SSE to S, complemented by light clouds and bright sunshine. Yesterday's weather, there was no recorded rainfall, and the maximum air temperature reached 22.6°C, with 13 hours and 4 minutes of sunshine reported.

June 8, 2025: No C&R Salmon or Seatrout were reported, likely due to clear skies and intense sun. Winds were gentle, shifting from WNW to NW and NNW. Rainfall was minimal at 0.4mm, the high temperature reached 17°C, and there were 5 hours and 7 minutes of sunshine. Now, let's turn to the Mad Fisherman's stories.

I remember in the salmon club up the weir stream one spring there was a snag. Everyone got stuck in it and lost their hooks. I eventually got stuck in it. It was a Sunday morning, and nobody was around only one other angler he was a Sargent in the guards. I pulled with all my might. I felt it move. I pulled out the nicest Christmas tree I've ever seen. It was covered in every kind of spinner you could think of Devons Toby’s, you name it. The Sargent asked me could he take one or two of the Toby’s they were his favourite bait. I told him take them all and I'll take everything else. I didn't like the Toby’s. None of the hooks were long enough in the water to go rusty. All baits were in mint condition. I'll never forget that day. We were to young children on Christmas morning

On July 6, 2025, activity among Currane anglers was relatively low. One angler reported catching a Grilse while trolling, with a few Sea Trout also caught on the troll. Fly anglers targeting Sea Trout noted that only occasional catch-and-release Sea Trout were taken while drifting. Weather conditions included a cold north-northwest wind, which may have contributed to the reduced catch rates. No reports were received from the catch-and-release river Inny or the Commeragh. The day's weather included a moderate to fresh NNW wind and substantial cloud cover. For the previous day, recorded rainfall was 3.4mm, maximum air temperature was 16.0°C, and there was 1 minute of sunshine.

June 4, 2025. To provide a comprehensive overview, we will begin with recent developments on the Commeragh, where anglers have been honing their worm fishing techniques; however, there are currently no reports regarding their effectiveness. Moving downstream to Lough Currane, Mr. Jason Rayner demonstrated notable proficiency, successfully landing a 5lb grilse on fly today. Congratulations are extended to Mr. Rayner for this achievement and for joining the ranks of distinguished Currane fly fishers. Regarding the sea trout, only a few were caught and released for record purposes.

Weather conditions at Currane were characterised by predominantly fresh west-southwest winds throughout the day, along with significant rainfall in the afternoon that persisted into the evening. These circumstances may encourage worm and Inny catch-and-release anglers to begin their activities earlier tomorrow. Yesterday's recorded weather included a trace amount of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 18.1°C, and 6 hours of sunshine.
