News and Events August 2013
Waterville Fisheries Development Limited invited to address
Inland Fisheries Ireland Board Meeting!!

Inland Fisheries Ireland periodically arrange to have their monthly
board meetings in the Regions. September’s meeting was scheduled
to be held in Waterville  and representatives from our Group were
privileged to be invited to attend and give a presentation to Board
Members on the work carried out by the Waterville Fisheries
Development Group. This was seen by this Committee to be a good
opportunity to strengthen our relationship with IFI and also to outline
some of the issues currently facing the Waterville Fishery.

In the event the meeting took place in the Derrynane Hotel as the
Butler Arms Hotel, originally scheduled as the venue, were unable to
provide adequate facilities for the Inland Fisheries Ireland Board

Our Secretary, Kevin O’Sullivan, accompanied by Committee
Members Tadhg O’Sullivan and Rod Robinson, gave a very full
presentation to the Board Members, which was very enthusiastically
received! A lively question and answer session followed and our
Committee felt that the whole event was very successful and very
beneficial to the interests of Waterville as a whole.

Kevin was able to outline both what we do and the actions we are
currently taking to protect this famous fishery, not as a fishing club
but as a community based Conservation Group. For their part the
Board were very congratulatory and impressed by what they heard
and indicated that they perceived The Waterville Group as a ‘Model’
format for other similar Groups, countrywide, to follow.
They also pledged their help and support to us wherever their remit
permitted.

The Board were also anxious to see the new Fish Counter which they
have recently installed in the Butler’s Pool. The meeting then
de-camped to Waterville House to view the fish counter and the
electronics now installed in the House.

Electronic fish counters have been placed on all three ‘weirs’ and are
reinforced with digital video cameras, which in turn are relayed back
to the monitors in Waterville House. This will enable meaningful data
on fish movements into and out of the system to be collated over
the coming years.

Ciaran Byrne, the CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland, explained to all the
importance of keeping the reflective bases and wiring in the counters
clear of debris and algae to ensure the installation functions properly.

It seems that Waterville now has a state of the art fish monitoring
facility!
We are very happy to offer our assistance to our local IFI Fishery
Team, Sean Clifford and Sean Moran to ensure its proper maintenance
