P sea. Vincent, you are living through an ecological disaster.

On a positive note, I heard John Murphy speak on the Ireland on the Fly podcast.  John really is a valuable friend of us anglers.  Recent research is going to make the fish farmers struggle in court. Sadly, I suspect they will be aided and abetted by Ireland's corrupt politicians.

Here is the latest update: Over the last three days, there have been no reported catches and releases (C&R) of Salmon or Sea Trout. It’s absoluitly not the fish farm as the only prob

Yes it’s one of several

Here are others

1 seals zillions arround Uk ie coast not practicing c and r

2 natural global warming

3 pollution pesticides habitat loss

4 poaching - more than what you imagine yes netting in the bays and that coast and up past Tralee

5 heron gillimot and the likes taking parr etc

6 humans

That’s the best  I can do on all this

It’s all very fast and sudden this decline

But I did say once you get to a very low amount of sea trout or salmon it’s like your near the bottom of the bath tub

The rest runs out to nothing fast

Iv been saying it’s sea trout are much more endangered than salmon for several years yet I believe the ie gov will let you stock wild salmon but not sea trout

There also lieth a big prob !

I hate c and r as you know

! But I can say if I was fishing there this year even though allowed by law I’d put every salmon and sea trout back - sadly due to shoulder  injery I’m out of action ! I suggested a meeting of local anglers to meet asap re what’s going on this year and invite the local

Mp ! The risk is total closure for several years here ! I greatly feel for the local comunity and guides ! To think after 10000 years of salmon and sea trout

We are living this day this year on a total collapse

Jock Monteith I just wanted my friend Jock to know of the sadness here ! He is part of a fight to help and restore wild salmon and sea trout in Scotland

5/6/2025

June 5, 2025. Only one Currane angler was out fishing, with no reports of Salmon or Sea Trout catches. The weather was variable, with gentle to moderate NW winds veering WNW, W, and then WNW.

Thanks to Currane angler Mr. Bill Bullick for sharing his memories and facts about Sea Trout fishing on Lough Currane. Now, we turn to Mr. Barry Vaughan for more insights.

Totally agree with Bill, as for 34 consecutive years visited Currane for a week Sea Trout fishing, 2 to 6 of us in the party. We met Bill and many others from all over Europe too and had some wonderful times. It must be 10 years since we last came, and left a great void in my life, I missed it so much. It’s an environmental disaster, but many just don’t seem to care about that. A crying shame.

Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 3.4mm, maximum air temperature 14.9°C, amount of sunshine 1 minute.

4/6/2025

On May 4th, June. There have been no reports of any Catch & Release Salmon or Sea Trout. Therefore, we turn our attention to a retrospective view from The Currane anglers. We invite Mr. Bill Bullick to share his perspective on this matter.

Thank you, Vincent, as always.  We should now be in peak seatrout season. Just 10 years ago, boats were coming in with 2-4 trout every day. I know because I was there. Fish averaged 2.5-3lb, with the odd specimen. How things have changed.  All because of the criminal decision to allow fish farms to expand adjacent to Ireland's most valuable remaining seatrout fishery. That scuppered my plans (and my friends' plans) to spend significant periods of our retirement in Waterville. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. Frank & Anne Donnelly were excellent hosts and we really enjoyed the area - with its friendly people and excellent restaurants. We loved the place. I can only imagine how the professional ghillies feel. 😡

April 29, 2025. This is an update from the Inny Farmer. Hi Vince, apologies for the delay in communication. Over the weekend, there was one salmon caught on the Commeragh River. As the saying goes, it is the early bird that catches the worm. Staying with the past weekend, we proceeded downstream to Lough Currane, where at least one salmon was reported to have been caught. Returning to current events, according to updates from Currane anglers, fishing activities were minimal with no notable catches today. The wind conditions were moderate and variable, shifting from ESE to SE and SSE, accompanied by bright sunshine. Yesterday’s meteorological data recorded a trace amount of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 18.0°C, and a total of 4 hours and 8 minutes of sunshine.

28/4/2025

28/4/2025. Unfortunately, Currane anglers had no catches today. Reflecting on the past, we recall times when Gillie’s operated without outboard motors, sharing memories of fishing days on Lough Currane. The stage is yours Mark.

Thank you so much for this Vincent, happy memories.

Seeing Brod's name as a Co author brings back another memory for me.

Fishing with my parents with Michael Moriarty in the 1950's , I thought I would take a boat for myself. The Buttler Arms was packed and all boatmen taken. Billy Huggard said he would see what he could do.

I was introduced to Brod who had just "come back from the building in England " but said he knew the lake and could find a boat.

Next morning we met and set out from the bungalow shore. The boat had been pulled up for some time and was dried out. Brod was bailing away and located the leak.

In those days we fished in tweed jackets and ties. Brod looked up and asked if he could borrow my tie . I handed it over and he stuffed it in the leak!

He handed it back at the end of the day and said it would be fine. It wasn't of course. Brod grew to be a fine ghillie and a marvellous raconteur. Happy memories.

Best wishes

Mark Maley

April 19, 2025. We extend our greetings for a pleasant Easter to everyone. Now proceeding with the weather update: The recorded rainfall yesterday amounted to 29.9 mm. Consequently, the anglers at Currane exhibited low enthusiasm today, correlating with the reduced water levels. It is evident that their fishing lines were inactive. The weather was windy with a fresh Northeast direction and mostly overcast throughout the day. Intermittent light rain throughout the day. Yesterday's weather recorded 3.6mm of rainfall, a maximum temperature of 13.2°C, and 3 hours and 6 minutes of sunshine.

On April 16, 2025. The water levels in Currane are significantly low. Consequently, today's update remains unchanged. Despite ongoing efforts to monitor the situation, there have been no significant developments. However, there is potential for improvement as a yellow rain warning has been issued for Kerry, effective from 11 PM tomorrow until 12 PM on Friday, according to the Currane weather chart by Met.ie. As for today’s weather, there was variable light wind from the NNE that veered to N, NNW, NW, and back to NNW. Yesterday recorded a trace amount of rainfall, with a maximum air temperature of 11.6°C and 12 hours of sunshine.  Just for the record the amount of rainfall for Lough Currane is 31.3 mm, some light at the end of the tunnel, I think we will be depending on the mountainous rainfall. www.met.ie/weather-forecast/lough-currane-kerry#forecasts

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Mr. Paddy Cotter. On behalf of the Currane anglers and all the residents of Waterville and Kerry, we extend our Sincere Condolences to Paddy’s family, especially his children, Martha and Robert, and the entire family.

Paddy moved to Waterville in the mid-1960s and worked at the Butler Arms Hotel as a bartender, where he demonstrated exceptional skills and professionalism. Later, he continued his career at the Waterville Lake Hotel, where his knowledge and expertise extended beyond serving pints. He confidently prepared complex drinks, impressing even international patrons. An example of his craftsmanship occurred when an American guest requested an exotic drink, which Paddy meticulously prepared with various fruits and sugars over 15 minutes. The guest praised Paddy for being among the best bartenders he had encountered worldwide. Just for the record I was there, Rest in peace, Paddy.
