30/9/14
30/9/14 Today may have been the last day of the 2014 Salmon season but at least 3 Anglers went out with their Swan song. I start on the Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie Mr. Paddy Barrett, was in great form again and finished his season with a 5lbs. Salmon and his good friend ended the day with a fine Grilse, and in the words of their Gillie MD, I am one of the greatest! Now we head downstream to the Big Lake/Lough Currane, There is one angler who has made the head lines many a time this Season and that is Mr. Andy Wishart of Northern Ireland and today is no exception, yes you have it, he caught a fine Grilse in the 4 lbs class on the troll, which he sportingly put back and just for the record Andy was fishing in the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com Now to the Sea Trout department, UK Angler Mr. Rob Elson, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton, caught 3 Sea Trout, ranging from Juniors up to 3 lbs. Anglers fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 1 Junior. Just for the record there were a nice Bag of Sea Trout caught by some Cork anglers, one of their Sea Trout was of a good grade so lads if you are reading the Blog, please drop me a line or even a photo if you have one. Wind W light with reasonable cloud cover this morning and good sunshine this afternoon, on that note as from tomorrow its all Sea Trout and C&R so let battle commence.

I went fishing with Michael O'Dwyer on the afternoon of Wednesday 17th of September and caught a Salmon. We really enjoyed our first 'proper' fishing
experience and had a fabulous afternoon with Michael on the beautiful loch.

24/9/14 Straight to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Fran Murray and Mr. Shane O’Neill caught 2 Juniors on the drift. Now we cut across the Lake to the Bungalow, Mr. Peter Liddel, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a find Sea Trout just over the 3 lbs which he sportingly returned, so my Noble Sea trout could head up stream to produce our great Sea Trout, be it small or specimen and best of all so we the angler can have good sport for the future and of course its right to survival, the reason I say this is because I had an email commenting on my photo of the Fish Farm out at Scarriff so I will let Mr. Murray T. Beatts have the last word on today’s notes. I saw your post about Salmon Farms, and all I can say is ask the Canadians! They have had a lot of trouble as a result of salmon farming in the ocean, including but not limited to inshore pollution caused by the inevitable overfeeding that goes along with salmon farming. In some areas it has changed the coastal biology completely.
Further, part of the local history in Waterville, as told to me by Michael Moriarty, is that the first incidence of UDN, commonly called Salmon Disease, was in Waterville and was rumoured to be the result of the short-lived rainbow trout hatchery there. This happened long before my time so it was not something I witnessed myself, but Mike was convinced of it.
Atlantic salmon and sea trout are such a fragile resource, that I would not agree that taking any risk with them merely to make money, was a good idea. Especially since the sea trout fishing in Waterville is now so much better than it used to be in my day.

Fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

9/9/14 We start with flat calm conditions this morning but this didn't deter Mr. Markus Kruse and his Gillie MD from putting their trolling rods out and it wasn't long before they had a rod bender, but sadly my Noble Salmon had the last laugh, but the same couldn't be said when they got their fly rods out for a bit of sport in the Sea Trout department, they met 8 Sea trout in total and caught 4, 2 juniors, 1 Sea Trout in the 2 lbs Class and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. 8/9/14 Straight to the back date department, yes you have it I failed miserably in my duties in my reporting on the upper lakes, anglers fishing with their Gillie MD, on Lough Derriana yesterday 7/9/14 caught a fine catch, with 7 Sea Trout ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. and topped that with 20 Brown Trout. Now back to the present, All my Noble fly anglers could do today was sit and wait, reason being the lake was like a milk pond, with clear blue skies and the sun raging down, need I say more. On that note, I must apologise for the lack of information, but as you can see my Noble Anglers failed miserably in all departments.

3/9/14 Straight to Marc’s fishing party from Belgium, they started their day on the Famous Butler Pool, saw a few nice fish but sadly no rod benders, so they headed for Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com then went out on Lough Currane and it wasn't long before the action started and here are their catches, they caught 13 Sea Trout on the drift ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Staying in the Sea Trout department, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin also had a good day with his fly rod, with 9 Sea Trout, 1 in the 5 lbs. class, 2 in the 3 lbs. class and the rest were in the junior Class and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said they rose a good few more. Went for cast today no fish but a nice net of wild mushroom caught by Paul Lawton taken from his facebook page |
Monday, September 1, 2014
1/9/14
1/9/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side and for good reason, my Noble Anglers were in a lethargic mood as they looked at the flat calm conditions and when the wind did get up it came from the North and as soon as they went for their drift the wind died down again as did their spirits, so they headed for the nearest bar, need I say more.
31/8/14
31/8/14 Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com reported that his clients caught 2 Trout and that it was hard going with a strong SW wind blowing up the lake, so on that note we will head upstream to the world famous Butler Pool, where there were 2 Salmon taken on the fly. Now for the Sea Trout catch of the day and to get all the facts we head to the upper lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin, where Mr. Sean Brick of Tralee caught 6 Sea trout ranging from Junior class up to 4 ½ lbs. All caught on the fly, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com
