Now for young Angler of the year and that goes to Young Archie Curnow of the UK who took the Crown for the River Inny with 2 fine Salmon both caught all in one day, weighing in at 11lbsa a 8.5lbs



straight to today’s facts, Mr Jim Sayers of Waterville caught 6 Juniors and Mr. John Allen caught 3 Juniors, also in good form was Mr. Rod Robinson with 3 Juniors to his fly rod, a Guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  caught a nice basket of Sea Trout, Mr. Anthony Buckley of Cork fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net caught 5 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2lbs and just for the record other boats did catch the odd Junior. I will finish the 2011 season on a personal note. Well it’s the end of the 2011 Season and what a Season we anglers have had, well, I know one Angler, that a great season that was Mr. Sean Smith of Yorkshire England, who caught the record  Sea Trout 13lbs5ozs on the fly on  Lough Currane fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea, and I might add is the biggest ever Sea Trout caught on a fly in Ireland, so in my book of Honours, Sean is the supreme Sea Trout Angler for 2011 In The Salmon and Gillie department Young Terence Wharton and his Father Mr. Terence Wharton take the honours of the first Salmon caught for 2011 and they crowned that by catching the first Salmon on the fly, the crown for the Biggest Salmon for 2011 goes to Dutch Angler Mr. William Timmermans who caught a fine 15lbs 5ozs Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of we Anglers who didn’t make the Honours list I hope you have butter luck in 2012 as always we anglers headed for the  Lobster Bar for the traditional Bacon and cabbage and as always it was first class, so a big thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Denis O’Carroll and their staff for a great evening. On that note I hope you all enjoyed reading the Waterville notes as I did writing them and I look forward to keeping you up to date in 2012  No Spin No fly's just facts.

There was good action on Lough Currane, so lets get to the facts, Mr. Anthony Buckley of Cork, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net caught 4 Juniors, also in good form was Mr. Demit Devereaux who  caught 5 Juniors fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  and staying with the Bungalow Mr. Jim Sayers also had a nice basket of sea Trout, and a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and @ watervilleboats@gmail.com caught 2 Juniors, now to catch of the day and that goes to Mr. Dona McCarthy of Waterville and The USA who caught 12 Juniors, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy

Lough Currane was on the quiet side so we will head straight up stream to Lough Namona where Mr. Sean Brick fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net caught 1 Junior and finished his day off with a fine 2lbs Sea trout.

Straight  to my Noble Sea trout department, and in the striking zone, Mr. Steven Brennem caught 4 Sea Trout, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com   and for the rest those anglers manipulating there flies they either failed miserably in their duties in catching my Noble Game fish or they most definitely failed to put their returns in, or in my case I have Miserably in my reporting, I will let you decide. Wind SW light and overcast with very low cloud.

Storm force winds from the NW brought the Sea Trout fishing to a standstill as anglers looked out at the lake, come this afternoon the wind dropped a bit and the odd boat did venture out and as of yet no reports of any real rod benders.

Mr. Chris O’Sullivan caught 2 Juniors with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @  tomsfishing@eircom.net also in good for was Mr Dona  McCarthy, who caught 4 Juniors, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, and Just for the record there were a few boats manipulating their flies. and as of yet, they haven’t reported their catches, I take it they drew a blank? Lough Currane was on the quiet side, but I can tell you Mr. Dona McCarthy of Waterville and the USA, would beg to differ and for good reason, because he caught 5 juniors fishing with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, and for the rest my Noble Anglers manipulating, there are no reports of any real rod benders.

Lough Currane was flat calm for most of the day but at least some anglers did see some action when the wind did get up once and a while, Mr. Ger McCarthy, Mr. Lorcan Fitzpatrick, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  caught 12 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 3lbs, now to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. john Nation caught 3 Sea Trout in the junior Class, and Mr. Denis Collins and Mr Houlihan caught 4 Juniors, and just for the record other boats did catch the odd Junior or two. Wind S light to calm and overcast.

Straight to the Sea Trout department only. In the Hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Paul Highland, caught 8 Sea trout from Juniors up to 2.5lbs. And Mr. Steve Nation caught £ Sea Trout from Juniors up to 2lbs, now we cut across the Lake to North Side, Mr. William Timmermans of Waterville and Holland fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  caught 6 Sea Trout from Juniors up to 3lbs and in Neil’s hired out department, an angler caught 8 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors. Wind was all over the place ESE ENE light and overcast with heavy rain this evening.

Mr. Mike Thian Sings his way to Glory after catching the last Salmon of 2011 season on the River Inny

Well its that time of year again and the 2011 Salmon Season has ended not with a bang but with a great end of season Party at the Waterville Inn and a good party was had by all, now to the Salmon and Sea Trout results, I start on the Big Lake/Lough Currane. In the Salmon fly department, Mr. James MacSweeny of the UK, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and @ watervilleboats@gmail.com  caught a fine 4.5lbs Grilse on the fly and finished his day off with a Sea trout 1.5lbs and his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan was telling me that James’s father Mr. Michael MacSweeny caught a 4.5lbs Grilse on the Famous Butler Pool during the week, now to the Sea trout department, Guests fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 Juniors, in the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com a angler caught 5 Juniors to his boat, Mr. Jim Sayers of Waterville caught 2 Juniors, Mr. Anthony Buckley of Cork, caught 1 Junior. Now we head up stream to Lough Namona, Mr. Tim O’Connor caught 1 Junior, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net Now we cut across the valley to the River Inny and all honours Go to local Angler, Mr. Mike Thian, who caught the last Salmon of the 2011 Seson on the River Inny and I can tell you he was in good voice tonight in the Waterville inn after winning a bottle of wine and a bottle Whisky as did Mr. James MacSweeny for catching the last Salmon of the Season on Waterville Lake.

All quiet on the Salmon front, on the Sea Trout front, just a few Juniors reported on the drift, wind SE fresh with good cloud cover.

Lough Currane, was on the wild side, so most Anglers headed for the Bar and the High Stool, but saying that one boat did venture out, Mr. Con  Murphy caught 5 Juniors on the drift fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. Wind SE Strong and overcast

There were a few juniors taken on the drift, but catch of the day in the Sea Trout department goes to Mr. Rob Elson of the UK fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, they caught 9 Sea trout from Juniors up to 2.5lbs. Wind SE fresh and overcast with heavy rain this morning.

Lough Currane was on the wild side this morning, with a strong SW wind blowing across Lake with heavy rain, but come midday, the Lake had calmed down, just a few Juniors caught on the drift, but don’t be surprised of a update later.

there was some great fishing on the Waterville Fishery today, starting on Lough Currane. In the Fly department, Mr. Peter Liddel caught 5 Juniors fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com  Mr. Chris McCullagh from Yorkshire England, caught 5 Sea trout ranging from Juniors up to 2lbs, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and at tomsfishing@eircom.net Now to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com  Luxembourg Anglers Bob And Roma, caught 14 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2.5lbs and finished their day off with a fine Grilse in the 5lbs class. Now we cut across the valley to the river Inny and staying with the Luxembourg, Mr. Jean Quintus caught a fine Salmon on the fly, and Jean was also telling me so far on this Visit to Waterville which began on the 15/9/11 he and his good friend, so far have caught 22 Juniors on the Lake a Grilse on the famous Butler pool and @ www.watervillegolflinks.ie

Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong WSW wind blowing down the lake, Anglers that did venture out here are their return’s, in the Fly department, the Binnion Party fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy caught 5 juniors and finished their day off with a fine 7lbs Salmon, now to the total Sea trout department, Mr. Bob Amlung caught 2 Juniors on the drift, fishing with his gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net  staying in the drifting department, Mr Peter Liddle fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 Sea trout up to 2.5lbs. Wins as already stated and there was good cloud cover with showers.

Right Flies, bad reporting, or you could say bad communications.

now today’s facts. In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com  one Angler from Germany, caught 6 sea trout and finished his day off with a fine Salmon in the 12 lbs class all caught on the fly and staying with Lakelanshouse.com an Angler in a hired out boat caught 6 sea trout from juniors up to 2lbs, also in good form in the Sea trout fly department was Mr. Liddle, who caught 8 sea Trout ranging from Juniors Up to 2.5lbs fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com    Just for the record you might want to read Sundays notes again.



Straight to the poaching department, I was reading on  www.loughcurrane.com in the last couple of days a massive Salmon was caught on the Fly and released in in Copal and before they put my Noble Gentlemen back, he measured 43 inches and if this correct My Noble Salmon would be in the 34lbs class, now today’s facts my Noble game fish were in a lethargic  mood, or my Noble Anglers were fishing the wrong Flies or Lures.  

Lough Currane was on the wild side but this didn’t stop Mr. Dona McCarthy of Waterville and the USA catching a fine specimen 10lbs 3ozs Sea Trout on the fly and I believe the had one mighty battle with my Noble Sea trout, so his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy was telling me, and going by the strain on his face I would believe it, because I tell you its no joke trying to hold a boat in those conditions, so congratulations to the both of them, also in good form in the Sea trout department was Mr. Peter Twomey, who caught 3 Juniors to his rod,  fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net and staying with the Sea Trout Mr. John Kirwan of Dublin caught a fine Sea trout on the troll fishing with his gillie Mr. Vincent Appleby and of www.salmonandseatrout.com and just for the record we had a good crack from a Salmon bur the rascal lives on to fight another day. 18/9/11 Update/Inny

Mr. Michael Henry of Paris France caught a fine 7lbs Grilse fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan and @ www.vinventsfishing.com  And last but not least there were 4 more salmon were recorded on the Inny but alas my noble Angler wants to stay anonymous, but he did give me the weights 3.7.10.5.and 14lbs all caught on the fly,


18/9/11 The Inny takes the had lines, first in the C&R striking zone was Mr. Michael Roden with 2 Salmon to his rod both Grilse, were in the 6lbs class, as always Michael was fishing with his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully  also in good form on the Inny was Mr. Peter Liddel fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.loughcurrane.com caught 1 grilse. Now to Lough Currane and C&R of the day goes to Mr. John Twomey fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net they caught 10 Juniors on the drift. Staying in the Sea trout department Mr. Bill Rushby caught 4 Juniors on the fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and last but not least local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestly also caught a couple of Juniors on the drift. Wind NW fresh to strong this morning and light to fresh in the afternoon with the odd shower.

Straight to the action and the Salmon department on the River Inny and I can tell you there was a fine catch of 6 Salmon caught by Mr. John Curnow of Kinsale Co Cork and party ranging from Grilse up to 12.5lbs, John was telling me that all were put back except the 12.5lbs Salmon and who could blame him, because he caught it on the fly, and on a single handed fly rod, and in my book that’s catch of the year on the Inny so far, staying with the Inny Mr. Michael Roden caught a fine 6lbs Grilse fishing with his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully. Now we cut across the valley to Lough Currane and staying in the Salmon department Mr. Bill Rushby fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, Caught 3 juniors and finished their day off with a 7lbs salmon all caught on the fly,  In the total Sea trout department, Mr. Peter Liddle fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  caught 4 juniors on the fly. Wind WNW fresh to strong with reasonable cloud cover with the odd shower.

There was some good action on the Waterville Fishery, in the trolling department on Lough Currane, Mr. john Baller of the UK and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com caught a 4.5lbs Grilse, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com and catch of the day on the Lake goes to Mr. Phil Staniforth, and his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, they caught 2 Salmon and finished their day off with a junior, In the Sea trout department Local Gillie Mr. bob priestly caught 2 Juniors. Now to the River Inny, Mr. Michael Roden Fishing with his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully, caught two Grilse ranging from 4lbs up to 6lbs which Michael sportingly returned both Salmon, also in good form was Mr. Bob Amhlung from Luxemburg and his Gillie Mr. Tom O'Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net they caught 2 Grilse, ranging from 6lbs up to 6.5lbs, now to the C&R of the day on the Inny, and that goes to Mr. Ivor O’Connor, who caught a fine 8lbs Salmon. Wind WNW light to fresh with heavy showers throughout the day.

Mr. Merlin Males from Denver Colorado USA and Gillie Mr. Sion  Brain

Straight to the Sea Trout fly department, and first in the striking zone, a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy  caught 7 Sea trout, also in good form was Mr. Bob Amhlung from Luxembourg, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net caught 2 Juniors, which he sportingly put back, and staying with Sea Trout Local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestly also caught 2 Sea Trout. Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny and there was a fine 6lbs Salmon caught on the fly by Mr. Merlin Males from Denver Colorado USA, Merlin was fishing with his Gillie Mr. Sion Brain and @ www.kbfishingireland.com and just for the record this was Merlin’s first ever Salmon and his first time ever using a double handed fly rod, I can see why he is called Merlin, he is a Magician with the fly rod and the truth of the pudding is in the eating of.

There was some good fishing on Lough Currane today, so straight to the action and the fly department, first in the striking zone was local Gillie Mr. Junior Scully and his client, who caught 8 Juniors and finished his day off with a fine Sea Trout of 4 ¾ lbs and his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully was telling me that all the Juniors were returned, staying with the Sea Trout, in the C&R department, Mr. Julian Smith and party from Scotland kept their rhythm in their fly rods today, with 10 Juniors. Also in good form in the C&R Sea Trout department, was Mr. Nick White from Wales, who caught 5 sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2lbs fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net and a Guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, caught 2 Juniors. Now to the Salmon and Sea Trout department, Local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestly caught a fine Grilse and 1 Junior on the drift. Now to the trolling department Mr. Walter Ruche of Switzerland fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly and of www.lakelandshouse.com caught 2 Salmon ranging from 6lbs up to 7lbs.        

13/9/11 Update

In the last few days, Mr. Marc Luyten and fishing party from Belgium, fishing in a hired out boat from Waterville Boats and @ watervilleboats@gmail.com caught 35 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2lbs and caught 2 Salmon ranging from 4lbs up to 6.5lbs in 3 days fishing. All caught on the Fly



There was some cracking fishing on Lough Currane today, so straight to catch of the day, in the Salmon Department, Mr. Dona McCarthy of Waterville and the USA, caught two Grilse and finished his day off with a cracker of a Salmon in the 12lbs class all caught on the fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and just for the record Dona put the Grilse back, now to the C&R fly department, Mr, Julian Smith and party, from Scotland fishing out of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 8 juniors and finished their day off with a Grilse. Now we head up stream to the Commeragh River where renowned Angler and a great manipulator with his spinning rod, Mr. Mike Thian, caught a fine Grilse on worm. Wind WNW fresh to strong with reasonable cloud cover with heavy showers at times.

Lough Currane was at a standstill as the back end of Hurricane Katia past the SW, so my Noble Anglers headed for the River Inny and so far no reports of any real rod benders.

Again Lough Currane was on the wild side this morning but you could fish, and only reports of a few Juniors being caught, now to the River Inny, Local Gillie Mr. Junior Scully caught a 5lbs Grilse this morning. Wind SW fresh to strong at times with light showers throughout the day.            

10/9/11 Update River Inny/Lough Currane

Lough Currane was at stand still with a strong SW wind blowing down the Lake, but at least you cold fish the South side, Local, Gillie Mr. Sylvester Donnelly and his Client caught a few Juniors and Sylvester was telling me that they rose a good few Sea Trout, no we will cut across the Valley to the River Inny as did the majority of Anglers, and here our the results as I know them, So far there has been one Salmon recorded  by Mr. Ivor O’Connor, who caught a 8lbs Salmon while spinning, and just for the record the amount of anglers fishing on the Inny I am sure there would have been a few more salmon procured and considering there was first class Water they have no excuse. Wind as all ready stated. As I am sure you all now that the back end of Hurricane Katia is going to us in the next 48 hours, so if tomorrow’s notes are not up as usual, you will know my net is down, but I hope yours will be full, so tight lines.

There was a fine Trout caught on the troll by Mr. Delap of the UK fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent Appleby and @ www.salmonandseatrout.com and we were unlucky in the Salmon department because we lost a fine Salmon on the troll but that’s fishing, and staying in the Salmon department, in the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Jim Restrict caught a Grilse on the drift fly fishing, now to the C&R Sea Trout department, Mr. Sean Smith and his Father, Mr. Michael Smith, caught 2 fine Sea trout on the drift, ranging from 2.5lbs up to 4lbs, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny, and C&R of the day goes to Mr. Dermot Devereaux with 2 Grilse weighing from 3lbs up to 6lbs, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net also in good form again today on the Inny was Mr. Mike Thian, with a fine fresh Grilse caught on the Black Birds Fancy, and staying with the Inny Local Gillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer caught a 5lbs Grilse. Wind WSW fresh to strong and overcast with heavy showers late this afternoon. 4/9/11 Look at yestedays notes

It was a wild day on Lough Currane today even though a few boats headed out this morning, but come lunch time thy were all blown off, so we will head for the River Inny, and that didn’t fair much better because it made a flood this morning so the river was dirty for a while. But one Angler did catch a fine grilse on the lower reaches just before it got dirty, and that was local Angler Mr. Mike Thian. Wind SW Strong and overcast with heavy showers throughout the day. Just for the record fish may have been caught on the river Inny late this afternoon and evening so watch this space.

3/9/11 Breaking News All quiet my Foot

There was some cracking fishing Around the Waterville Fishery today, so we will start with the lake, in the specimen Sea Trout department, Mr Edwin O’Connor caught a cracker of a Sea Trout on the fly weighing in at 10 lbs 6ozs fishing in a hired out boat from Waterville Boats and @ watervilleboats@gmail.com and there was another 10lbs Sea Trout also on the fly, now we will cut across the Valley to the River Inny and catch of the day, and that goes to Young Archie Curnow of the UK because he caught two cracking fish weighing in at 11.5lbs and 8.5lbs and his uncle, Mr. John Curnow, finished day off with a Grilse on the fly

As a result of representations made by the Waterville Fisheries Development Group to Inland Fisheries Ireland
an extension to the season has now been granted, by the Minister, to bring the closing date back to its historic date of the 12th October. It should be noted that this extension will only apply to fishing for Sea Trout with the fly. Congratulations to both our Chairman, Michael Roden and our hard working Secretary, Kevin O'Sullivan, in achieving what many thought to be impossible and that includes the upper lakes so to all you Noble Game Anglers who like the Upper Lakes you want to book now, going by what I hear there going fast. Young Archie Curnow of the UK was telling me that first this morning that he and his Uncle John tried the Dry Fly and missed 6 good fish, so they decided to go to the wet fly, and it wasn’t long before their rods were bent double, Archie caught 1 Junior and his Uncle John caught 1 Junior and finished his day off with a fine Sea trout of 2.5lbs all caught on the drift, staying with the Sea trout, Mr. Sean Smith of the UK and his Father Mr. Michael Smith caught 2 Juniors with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and  @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind N light to calm so calm this morning it wouldn’t have blown a candle out, bright sunshine for most of the day.

Straight to the Salmon and Sea Trout fly department, and catch of the day, and that goes to Young Archie Curnow of the UK, fishing with his Uncle John, they caught 5 Sea Trout, 3 Juniors, 3.5lbs and best of all a fine Sea Trout weighing in at 4lbs and just for the record that was Archie’s first Sea Trout, staying with the Sea Trout, Mr. Michael Smith of the UK and his Son Sean, caught 2 Sea Trout, with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net also in good form in the Sea Trout department, was local Gillie Mr. Bob priestly who caught 4 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2lbs. Now to the mixed bag department, Mr. Mark Knowles of the UK caught a 6lbs Grilse and finished his day off with a a fine Sea Trout in the 3 lbs class, Mark was fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy. There was some great action on the Waterville Fishery after yesterdays flood, so straight to the Salmon and Sea Trout fly department on Lough Currane, Mr. Peter McNeal of the UK was in superb form with 2 Grilse and 7 Sea Trout, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy in the trolling department Mr. Bob Priestly caught 2 Grilse. Now to the total Sea Trout Fly department, Mr. Michael Smith of the UK and his son Sean fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O‘Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com  caught 7 Sea Trout, 2 in the 4lbs class and the rest in the Junior class, and just for the record, all were returned as always, Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny, where Mr. Ivor O’Connor and his Gillie Mr. Sian Brain caught 2 Salmon in the 5lbs class, also in good for was Sian’s Father Mr. Kevin Brain, and of www.kbfishingireland.com  who also caught a Grilse, and staying with the Inny, Anglers fishing with their Gillie Mr. Junior Scully caught 1 Grilse, and an Angler fishing by himself also caught 1 Grilse. Mr. Nick Groot and Mr. Mark Smits of Holland caught a fine Grilse on the troll, with their Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan and @  watervilleboats@gmail.com once they had dispatched my Noble Gentlemen they headed straight for the Waterville INN to have their Salmon Cooked by Cordon Bleu Cook Mrs. Sally Duff of the Waterville INN, and it wasn’t  long before it was on the table and devoured and a good party was had by all, now we head back out to Lough Currane, there was also a 5.5lbs Grilse caught on the troll by Mr. Peter McNeal of the UK fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, now to the hired out boat department of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Don O’Leary caught 4 Sea Trout, ranging from Juniors up to 3lbs. Wind SW fresh with reasonable cloud cover with the odd light shower. There is a few evening shift anglers so watch this space.

All the head lines go to Liam Brick who caught his first ever salmon on the troll today fishing with his Father Mr. Sean Brick and may it be the first of many.  On the Sea Trout front there a few caught but nothing that would hit the head lines as of yet. Now to the DVD fishing department I was very kindly given a DVD from Mr. Richie Johnston and @ info@anglersview.tv   on  Follow the fly A Mayfly Season in Ireland  and I can tell its worth getting and there nothing like watching the experts  with film and fly and that’s a fact.

Sorry for the delay out celebrating with the Family at the Huntsmen Restaurant, which I must say the Food was first Class.

Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SE wind blowing with heavy rain but that didn’t deter Mr. Peter McNeal of the UK heading out cross the Lake, with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy, and I can tell you it wasn’t long before he caught himself a fine Grilse on the fly. On the Sea Trout front very little action because of the wild conditions, but the same couldn’t be said  upstream on the upper Lakes, on Lough Derriana  Mr. Tom Aharne and Mr. Joe Barry caught 6 Sea Trout ranging from 4lbs down to juniors.

18/8/11 Update

Lough Currane was flat calm for most of the day, on the Sea Trout front, local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestly was telling me that he had 1 Junior on the dry fly, now for some late news, renowned Cork Angler Mr. Patsy Quilligan, was in good form with his fly rod last week, Patsy told me that he caught a fine Salmon and a few nice Sea Trout, which he sportingly returned all fish. Wind N then veered NE and veered back into the NW this evening, bright and sunny all day and warm.

The 2011 Seatrout Catch and Release Competition was voted by all as a resounding success for the Waterville Fisheries Development Group! Thirty anglers took part in the competition over the 12th and 13th August in what can only be described as very adverse weather conditions! A total of 42 fish were landed and released by the competitiors over the two days. The greatest number of fish was caught by Eddie Blanche who, as a result, won the coveted first prize, a John Meagher Anglers Fancy Lake Boat! The biggest sea trout of the competition, at 46 cm, was caught by Denis O’Sullivan. There were seven other prize winners and the final results are printed below.

The prize giving dinner at the Waterville Inn, on Saturday evening, turned into a great event with an excellent atmosphere and good food and wine. Our thanks have been extended to the Watervlle Inn and its staff for the excellent service they provided. Our thanks are also due to Vincent Appleby who tirelessly toured the lake on the competition days photographing competitors in their natural element! Its worth mentioning that all the photos reproduced on this website this year are courtesy of Vincent!

The competition has raised almost €3000 for the Waterville Fisheries Development Group and this will be used to further its work in managing and enhancing this fabulous fishery.

The Waterville Fisheries Development Group wishes to extend its thanks to all the competitors who took part together with the sponsors and organisers who made the event such a resounding success.

There were a few Sea Trout caught but nothing that would hit the head lines, so straight to the River Inny where Mr. Kevin Brain his Son Sian caught two fine Salmon on the fly and just for the record there have been well over 20 Salmon plus caught in the last three days.

As of yet I can’t give you all the facts on the Waterville Fly fishing Championship As soon  as I have all the Facts and figures I will put them up with the photos of the past two days, all I will say is, the Waterville Inn provided a great meal and first class entertainment, and on behalf of all we Anglers and non Angler alike, I would like to Thank our host Mr. Damien Duff and all his staff for a great evening. On the none fly fishing front  Mr. Mike Thian caught a 11lbs Salmon on the Commeragh, now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny where there was a few Salmon caught, Mr. Dan Sugrue caught one Grilse, Mr. Martin Lanigan O’Keeffe caught 3 Grilse which were returned, All caught on the fly.

Waterville Lake fly fishing 2 day Championship got into full swing today, will give you the winner late tomorrow night, but just one bit of News Mr. Liam Ellis of Cork caught a fine 10lbs Salmon and as he netted his fine fish, I can tell you he wasn’t amused because Salmon don’t count in this competition and in Kerry they have a very good saying, but I am glad to say this is a Family Site. Very few boats out manipulating on Lough Currane, all I can tell you that I was out with a Gentlemen and his 2 Sons from the USA and they were unlucky because we lost a fine Salmon on the troll, but sadly losses don’t count, and we finished the day off with a nice Sea Trout in the 1lbs class which was put back to fight another day, now to the River Inny and there was a fine Salmon caught by our Chairmen Mr. Michael Roden fishing with his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully, the maestro of the River Inny and that is a fact and I have spoken and that’s it. Now just to let all you anglers know there is a lot of hard work in keeping the Sea Trout streams clean and hear is some photos of that great team, that do all the hard work so we can have good fishing and keep catching those great specimens. Wind NW light to fresh with the odd heavy shower.

There wasn’t much action on Lough Currane and with little to no wind that is not surprising and what wind was there was coming from the NW light to calm with the odd heavy shower, plus they had the Waterville Regatta today, so on that note I will cut across the valley to the River Inny, there was a fine Grilse caught by a Dutch Angler fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly and @ www.lakelandshouse.com

The Swiss Flag was fly flying high over Lough Currane today, Lionel, Caught a fine Grilse on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and @ www.oshealoughcurrane.com  now to the loss department, Mr. Dan Sugrue fishing with his Gillie Mr. Brod O’Sullivan of Stella Maris Guest house, lost a fine Salmon on the troll, they reckoned  it was in the 10lbs class, sorry lads losses don’t count. Wind NW with reasonable cloud cover. On the rain front there was heavy rain early this morning but sadly it didn’t last, but at least it made a small flood.

All quiet on the SW front in all departments. Wind WNW light. With reasonable cloud cover.

Lough Currane may well be on the low side and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work that one out, low lake or not this didn’t stop Mr. Don O’Leary catching a fine 9lbs Salmon on the drift early this morning, fishing in a hired out boat from www.oshealoughcurrane.com on the Sea Trout front no reports of any real rod benders. Wind NW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com reported to me that that he and his Guest caught a Grilse on the troll, so not so quiet on the SW front in all departments, and just for the record on the 28/7/11 Mr. Fitzpatrick caught 3.5lbs Grilse on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan and @  watervilleboats@gmail.com

Straight to Mr. Frank Donnelly and of  www.lakelandshouse.com who reported to me that he and his guest caught 2 Grilse on the troll, weighing in at 5lbs up to 6.5lbs, on the Sea Trout front no reports of any real Rod Benders.

Dr. Tim Gleason, caught 2 fine Grilse on the fly with his Gillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, also in good form with the fly, was Mr. Dave Bourke who caught a fine 5.5lbs Grilse in the Mouth of the Commeragh, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnell and of www.lakelandshouse.com  In the Sea Trout department again just the odd Junior caught.

There was 1 Salmon/Grilse caught on the troll by Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea and @ tomsfishing@eircom.net and on the Sea trout front just the odd Junior reported but nothing that would make the news head lines.
