The Irish Fly Fair 15th &16 November 2014
The Waterville Fisheries Development Group
will be represented at this year’s Irish Fly Fair
at The Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill, Co.Galway,
on the 15th and 16th of this month. Thanks to
the kind generosity of Enrico Fantasia, a regular
visitor to our Waterville Fisheries, we have been
invited to share his exhibition stand at the Fair.

We all know the important contribution Angling
Tourism makes to our local economy and the
Galway Fly Fair is one of the main showcases of
the year for all who are involved in Angling in
Ireland. A national study, carried out on behalf
of Inland Fisheries Ireland and published last year,
found that Angling Tourism generates over three
quarters of a Billion Euro to the Irish Economy and
provides over 10,000 permanent jobs!

You are invited to make available to our
representatives, who will be attending the Fair,
any promotional material you have, in order to
take advantage of this opportunity for free
advertising to a ‘captive audience’!!
We are producing a simple ‘flyer’ detailing the
Angling opportunities in Waterville and which
will list those local enterprises which service the
Angling public.

Please put your Promotional Material in an
envelope marked for the attention of Tadhg
O’Sullivan and leave in the Londis Store in
Waterville before Saturday 8th November.

As space on our stand will be limited, could
you please restrict your material to say, one
business card and one brochure  per business.
Remember this is free advertising! However, a
small donation would be greatly appreciated to
help defray the printing costs of setting up our
exhibition material in Galway.

W.F.D.G Drawn out
Kevin with his winning ticket
12/10/14 Well its that time of year again and the Curtain has come down on the Waterville Fishery and the 2014 Salmon and Sea Trout season. We start with the W.F.D.G. draw which was held in the Lobster Bar this evening and the winning ticket drawn out, was Mr. Kevin O’Sullivan of Lake road Waterville, so congratulations to Kevin. Now we head for the Waterville Inn for the presentation of the Jolly Swagman Sea Trout Cup for the biggest Sea Trout caught this year and that was won by Dutch Angler Mr. Tim Van Der Laan, Sadly Tim couldn't
be there to receive The Jolly Swagman Sea Trout Cup, So Local Gillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer was
Damien gets the Party into full swing
Damien Presents the JS Cup to Mike
presented the Cup by the Landlord of the Waterville Inn on Tim’s behalf, and there was great craic had by all, with plenty to eat and on behalf of the anglers I would to thank Mr. Damien Duff and his good wife Sally for a great night of entertainment. Now to today’s closing facts well I will let you decide because there was no wind what so ever, you could say the

one of the winning tickets drawn out of the bucket
for a spot prize
Waterville fishery was at a standstill with little to no action except there was the odd Junior taken and a few Brown Trout taken on the upper lakes. Now to the personal department, I would like to thank all you anglers who have put your say in, in the past season and for the great support I got when I was criticised but everybody is entitled to their own opinion and without your fantastic support this site wouldn't exist so keep reading and having your say, this is the Anglers site, and to all you anglers who let their fingers do the talking at the end of their days fishing a big thank you for that and for the ones who failed on a regular bases may the Lord have mercy on your laziness, but I must admit I was guilty of that myself at times and last but not least I would like to thank all the team of the Inlandfisheries for their great support to me and the Waterville Fishery this year as they do every year. If there is any news in the close season I will keep you up to date so on that note I will sign off by saying No Spin No Fly’s Just Facts and look forward to keeping you all up to date in 2015

11/10/14

11/10/14 As promised I will start with Mr. Jim Sayers and his party who were fishing on Lough Namona yesterday and here are their results, Jim caught  a fine Sea Trout in the 4 lbs Class and his good friend John Walsh, caught a fine Brown Trout in the 1 ¼ lbs class and  Jim was telling that they also lost a good fish, in his opinion it was a Salmon but as he said he wouldn't put a mortgage on it, they also caught a Junior. Now Back to the present and we will stay with the upper Lakes and Mr. Jim Sayers and party, today they were fishing on Lough Cloonaghlin, Jim reported that the action ddidn'tstart until late afternoon, reason being they were waiting for the wind to get up so here are their results. Mr. John Walsh, caught a fine 1 ½ lbs Sea Trout, they also caught 20 Juniors and a good basket of Brown Trout. Staying with the upper Lakes, on Lough Derriana, Tim and Jeremy O’Connor, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 1 Sea Trout of 1 ½ lbs. Now we head down stream to the big Lake /Lough Currane. Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville caught 3 Trout while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com just for the record all yesterdays and today’s catches were returned. Wind light and variable. Last Night I got an email from a concerned angler, so I will let him have centre stage. Vincent:
I am disturbed to hear that the EU has dismissed the complaint regarding salmon farms and their effect on wild fish stocks.  At the same time, IFI has just stated, after examination of all the information regarding the same subject, that there is considerable negative impact to the wild fish stocks as a result of the sea lice attendant to salmon farming.  Please urge your readers to spend some time in the close season writing to their local TDs to encourage them to raise questions regarding this subject.
It might also be an idea for some organization to file a lawsuit on behalf of all the anglers requesting an injunction against these farms pending further investigation.  Surely there are some lawyers in Ireland who are also fishermen?  The time to protest these dangerous and polluting salmon farms and stop the further decimation of the wild salmon and sea trout stocks is now!
Ireland is one of the last countries in the world where you can easily access such fishing, and where it does not cost exorbitant amounts to do so.  Please stand up and prevent the EU from using Ireland as a market garden.  Most European Countries have already decimated their own fish stocks, prevent Ireland from making the same mistakes and ending up barren of salmon and sea trout.
Very truly yours,
Murray T. Beatts
A concerned angler

Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville was in good form again, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com with 5 Trout to their Boat and for the rest of the angling community no comment excluding local Angler Mr. Jim Sayers. Wind W light with reasonable cloud cover at times.

9/10/14

Anglers get a presidential  salute
9/10/14 Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville, take all the headlines in the C&R department with 7 Trout to his rod. As always Donagh was fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and for the  rest of the angling community they either failed to catch my Noble Sea Trout, or if they did have the odd rod bender, they most certainly failed to let their fingers do the talking, whether they caught fish or not. Wind NW fresh with showers throughout the day.

8/10/14

8/10/14 There was Fork Lightening and Thunder and two lightening conductors, at least one boat saw some action. Mr. Mark Doormen was in good form with his carbon fiber fly rod with 3 Sea trout, ranging from Junior class up to 2 lbs, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley and you can say without any fear of contradiction they brought their fellow anglers down to earth. One Gillie text me, too many flashes, all I can say to that is, they were dam lucky they weren't electrocuted. Wind W strong this morning and calmer in the afternoon with heavy showers throughout the day.

6/10/14

6/10/14 There was only one angler that was in the rod bending zone today and that was Mr. Peter Ruffle, who caught 6 Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and for the rest of the Angling community they either failed miserably in procuring my Noble Sea Trout, or what is more lightly they failed to let their fingers do the talking at the end of their days manipulation. On the weather front there was reasonable cloud cover with the odd shower plus a mixture of hailstone and the amount of rainfall yesterday was 30.8 mm.
5/10/14  Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SW blowing down the lake and here are the Lough Currane Sea Trout results. First in the striking zone was Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, who caught 1 Sea Trout to his rod and in the words of his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com it was wild out there and bad. Staying with the North Shore. Mr. Peter Ruffle, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com also caught 2 Trout to his rod. Back to the weather just for the record it made a fair bit of rain today, it will be interesting to see how much rain fell, but remember one has to take into account we had a long dry spell and because of this the land will take a fair bit before we will get the benefit, will give the facts as soon as they are on line.

4/10/14

4/10/14 There were a few boats manipulating and here are the reported results, Peter fishing out of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com caught 2 Trout with his Gillie MD. Now we head for the Bungalow, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, caught 2 Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  Now we head down the North shore to Vince’s Harbour, Trevor, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 6 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 3 lbs. Now we cut across to the South side and Coffees Bay, Mr. Denis O’Sullivan of Lake road Waterville, caught 3 Juniors. Wind was south first thing this morning and veered all over the place, but come afternoon it went into the NW and it was very cold out there going by the reports, so my Noble Anglers did well and I have spoken in the authority invested by myself.

Friday, October 3, 2014

3/10/14 There was a light Westerly blowing down the lake with heavy rain at times, but this didn't deter, Trevor, from catching 2 Trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie MD Esq. Just for the record Trevor was fishing out of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com Now we cut across the Lake to the South Side and the hired out Boat Department of www.lakelandshouse.com and their backdate department, Renée and Jean Louis from France, caught 12 Sea Trout, ranging from Juniors up to 3 lbs. over 3 days and staying in www.lakelandshouse.com backdate department, Mr. Steve Cloake, fishing with his Gillie Mr. John Murphy caught 16 Sea Trout, ranging from Juniors up to 3 ½ lbs. The light of day
2/10/14 There was a strong SW wind blowing down the lake and very few boats ventured out, 3 to be precise and there was only one boat that manipulated their rod during the day with some fine action and then let his fingers do the talking in the evening and that was UK angler Mr Rob Elson, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 7 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior Class up to 3lbs. Wind as already stated and overcast.

Mr. Joe Simpson
loughcurrane.com
1/10/14 Lough Curran was on the quiet side with just 2 Juniors caught by Kevin and Senan Lavery, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com As you all know its a year to the day when Mr. Paul Lawton of Cork caught and released that magnificent Sea Trout, and was ably assisted by Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville and their cameraman was Mr. Peter Muldoon of Co. Cork, but sadly they have failed miserably in their duties to procure the same results this day and I have to say its back to the drawing board in all departments i.e. Gillie, fly man and cameraman, on that note we head for the poaching department of www.loughcurrane.com and the higher Lakes and Lough Namona, Regular visitor Joe Simpson caught a fine brown trout on Lough Namona today!  Just for the record you can fish the upper lakes until the end of the season and remember its fly only Wind west light with reasonable cloud cover.

30/9/14

30/9/14 Today may have been the last day of the 2014 Salmon season but at least 3 Anglers went out with their Swan song. I start on the Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie Mr. Paddy Barrett, was in great form again and finished his season with a 5lbs. Salmon and his good friend ended the day with a fine Grilse, and in the words of their Gillie MD, I am one of the greatest! Now we head downstream to the Big Lake/Lough Currane, There is one angler who has made the head lines many a time this Season and that is Mr. Andy Wishart of Northern Ireland and today is no exception, yes you have it, he caught a fine Grilse in the 4 lbs class on the troll, which he sportingly put back and just for the record Andy was fishing in the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com Now to the Sea Trout department, UK Angler Mr. Rob Elson, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton, caught 3 Sea Trout, ranging from Juniors up to 3 lbs. Anglers fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 1 Junior. Just for the record there were a nice Bag of Sea Trout caught by some Cork anglers, one of their Sea Trout was of a good grade so lads if you are reading the Blog, please drop me a line or even a photo if you have one. Wind W light with reasonable cloud cover this morning and good sunshine this afternoon, on that note as from tomorrow its all Sea Trout and C&R so let battle commence.

29/9/14 Straight to the hired out Boat Department of www.lakelandshouse.com Canadian Angler, Mr. John Hamill, caught 4 Juniors on the drift and Mr. Clive MacDonnell caught 1 Sea Trout to his fly rod. UK angler Mr. Rob Elson fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton, caught 4 Sea Trout, all in the 1 ½ lbs class and Rob was telling me that he lost a cracker of a Sea Trout, it took his fly and went right down and sadly the rest is history. Now we head to the Salmon department, again Mr. Paddy Barrett was in good form with a fine 6lbs. Salmon caught on the fly and ably assisted by his Gillie MD. Wind SW with good cloud cover this morning but sadly bright sunshine all afternoon.

The picture tells the story

28/9/14

Mr. Ed Kelly
28/9/14 There was some reasonable action in both the Salmon and Sea Trout department, mind you that depends what boat you were manipulating in? In the Salmon department, Mr. Ed Kelly of Killarney caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the troll just out side the Mouth of the Commeragh. Also in good form in the Salmon department was Mr. Paddy Barrett, who caught a fine Salmon on the fly, in the 7 lbs. class, fishing with his Gillie MD Esq. Renée and Erni
26/9/14 Lough Currane as we all know is on the low side but this doesn't deter enthusiastic Anglers from manipulating his or her flies or lures and today was no exception, first in the C&R striking zone was UK angler Mr Rob Elson, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, who caught a fine 4 lbs. Grilse on the troll and finished their day off with 3 sea Trout in the Junior class caught on the drift. 24/9/14

24/9/14 Straight to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Fran Murray and Mr. Shane O’Neill caught 2 Juniors on the drift. Now we cut across the Lake to the Bungalow, Mr. Peter Liddel, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a find Sea Trout just over the 3 lbs which he sportingly returned, so my Noble Sea trout could head up stream to produce our great Sea Trout, be it small or specimen and best of all so we the angler can have good sport for the future and of course its right to survival, the reason I say this is because I had an email commenting on  my photo of the Fish Farm out at Scarriff so I will let Mr. Murray T. Beatts have the last word on today’s notes. I saw your post about Salmon Farms, and all I can say is ask the Canadians!  They have had a lot of trouble as a result of salmon farming in the ocean, including but not limited to inshore pollution caused by the inevitable overfeeding that goes along with salmon farming.  In some areas it has changed the coastal biology completely.
Further, part of the local history in Waterville, as told to me by Michael Moriarty, is that the first incidence of UDN, commonly called Salmon Disease, was in Waterville and was rumoured to be the result of the short-lived rainbow trout hatchery there. This happened long before my time so it was not something I witnessed myself, but Mike was convinced of it.
Atlantic salmon and sea trout are such a fragile resource, that I would not agree that taking any risk with them merely to make money, was a good idea.  Especially since the sea trout fishing in Waterville is now so much better than it used to be in my day.

23/9/14

23/9/14 We start on the north side, at the Bungalow, first in the striking fly zone was Mr. Jim Sayers of Waterville with 3 Juniors to his rod, also in good form at the Bungalow was Mr. Anthony O’Sullivan and friends, who caught 2 Sea Trout. Now we cut across the Lake to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Keeshond and Wynn, caught 6 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior class up to specimen class of which was 6 lbs. Also in good form was Erni and Renée, who caught 4 Sea Trout from Junior class up to 2 lbs. while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Now we head back to the Bungalow, Mr. Lindsay Richards of the UK, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  was in good form in the fly C&R department with 3 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 1 ½ lbs and last but not least, Mr. Peter Liddel, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Sea Trout in the 2 ½ lbs class. Wind WNW light with rain late this afternoon but not enough to tickle my Noble Game Fish’s taste buds?

22/9/14

Salmon Farms, what do you think? Drop us an email.
22/9/14 There were a few boats manipulating their flies and here are the results of the day, first on the podium with 5 Sea Trout to his rod, all in the 1 ½ lbs class was Mr. Lindsay Richards of the UK and guided by his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. Peter Liddel caught 2 Trout to his rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now we head down the Lake to Vince’s harbour, Mr. John Watson, caught 4 Sea Trout to his Rod, ranging from Junior class up to 4lbs while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Wind calm this morning and a light westerly Mr. in the afternoon with reasonable cloud cover.

21/9/14

This Morning
21/9/14 There was bright sunshine all day and very little to no wind this morning but come afternoon there was a light Westerly blowing down the lake and at least some anglers took advantage and let their flies do the talking.Mr. Lindsay Richards of the UK, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught a nice Sea Trout in the 1 ½ lbs class. In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Keeshond and his good friend Wynn, caught a few nice Sea Trout in the Junior class this evening. Now for the wise crack of the day? and that goes to Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com I sent Dom a text, any good by you and any wind? his reply, 2 Trout and Sam, all I can say is up the Kingdom of Kerry and congratulations to Kerry for winning the Sam Maguire.

20/9/14

20/9/14 There was good action in Sea Trout fly department despite a light wind with bright sun throughout the day so lets get to the facts. Mr. Peter Liddel caught 3 Juniors on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Paul Amos caught a fine 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout and not satisfied with that he topped that with a fine Sea Trout of 3 lbs and left the best to last with a Sea Trout in 5 lbs. Class which he sportingly put back to fight another day, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com and just for the record, Michael reported that one of their Sea Trout were quite fresh. Staying on the north side and in the hired out boat department of Waterville boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com I failed to report yesterday that Mr. John Young of the UK caught 5 Juniors and finished his day off with a fine Sea Trout of 2 ½ lbs. Now we head up the North Shore to the Bungalow and staying in the fly department, Mr. John Hallstead of Dingle and Mr. Ken Partington  caught 10 Sea Tout, ranging from Junior class up to 6 ½ lbs. Now we cut across the Lake to the South side. Mr. Jack Feehan caught 1 Sea Trout of 2 lbs while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Now we head to the West end of the Lake, Mr. Andrew Price of Ennis, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, caught 3 Sea Trout ranging from juniors up to 2 lbs. Not a bad days manipulation.

Now back to the present, and staying in the boat department of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Mr. Liam McKnight was in good form again with two Juniors. The fry are counted and measured.....
We observed one of the operations on the middle Commeragh last week, where in just 20 metres of stream almost 1000 salmon fry were recorded!!
....the team move through with the electro fishing nets
fry are placed in buckets. Note the aerator!

11/9/14

10/9/14

10/9/14 There was a nice SE wind blowing down the lake, but sadly my Noble Anglers failed to rise my Noble Game fish in the blazing hot sunshine. So you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out today’s results.

9/9/14

9/9/14 We start with flat calm conditions this morning but this didn't deter Mr. Markus Kruse and his Gillie MD from putting their trolling rods out and it wasn't long before they had a rod bender, but sadly my Noble Salmon had the last laugh, but the same couldn't be said when they got their fly rods out for a bit of sport in the Sea Trout department, they met 8 Sea trout in total and caught 4, 2 juniors, 1 Sea Trout in the 2 lbs Class and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. 8/9/14

On that note, I must apologise for the lack of information, but as you can see my Noble Anglers failed miserably in all departments.

1/9/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side and for good reason, my Noble Anglers were in a lethargic mood as they looked at the flat calm conditions and when the wind did get up it came from the North and as soon as they went for their drift the wind died down again as did their spirits, so they headed for the nearest bar, need I say more.

31/8/14
