Some Fan Dan some Fish!
6/10/17 All the headlines come from the North Shore and the Oxford Utd supporters Fishing Club and for good reason while fishing in the hired out boat department of Waterville boats of watervilleboats@gmail.com Oxford fan Dan, caught a cracker of a 6 lbs. 4ozs Brown Trout drifting off Church Island, while fishing with his favourite Gillie and fellow Oxford Utd Fan Mr. Michael O’Sullivan and just for the record this cracker of a Fish was netted by Mr. Timothy McKibbin also a fellow Oxford Utd fan. Now we go to the Brown Trout measurement department, Oxford’s Fan Dan’s Brown Trout was 25 inches long, Girth 14 inch and Dan’s flie of the day was a size 12 Silver Invicta and took 25 minutes to conquer this fine fish. When asked about the wind the Oxford Utd 3 replied that’s your department. Yesterdays Weather amount of rainfall 0.6mm. Maximum air temperature 15.0c.

  1. Is there no self respect left in Lough Currane
This is in all probability a male seatrout much required in the catchment and within 10 days of spawning. Disgraceful and hopefully the last time such a fish is taken in Lough Currane
Catch and release must be put in place and the angler should be prosecuted if the trout is a seatrout and has no tag

    1. Concur John. That fish looks ready for the redds. Not a good look on a fishery which is so obviously on its knees.

    1. Not really the point
This fish should never be killed this near to spawning
It is a shameful way to treat fish like these which are required to give some hope to the system
By the way what age was the fish

    2. Well John, if the type of fish is 'beside the point' why did you raise it question in the first place?
I was asked to determine whether it was a sea trout or not, and that is what I did!

    3. You do not get my point. This fish should have been released if possible to bolster the spawning stock. When the season was extended to 12 October it was anticipated that the vast majority of trout would be released and that the extension was related to prolonging the angling business for the town without causing harm to the stocks which were quite robust at the time. We now have a situation whereby trout are being killed which are quite obviously near to spawning and with everyone bar none concerned with the future of the fishery , people are outraged at such fish being killed. It really does not matter whether the trout is a Brown trout or sea trout except in regard to tagging but both are equally important to the catchment. Unfortunately the individual who caught the fish may have tried to release the fish but failed but the report sought to herald the catch as something which should be seen as a great catch but should have mentioned the effort to revive the fish. Now in regard to tagging of the fish, are we now going to give individuals the capacity to decide that their large trout are in fact brown trout and not sea trout and don't require a tag. A bye law to protect all trout in the system is required for next year. Do not forget that the real problem here is what is happening nearby on both salmon farms and this needs to be the focus of attention but the drastically reduced trout stock needs protection with mandatory catch and release until other issues are resolved. It is quite probable that the stock is now severely compromised at population level and no exploitation should take place until stocks recover.

  4. For everyone's information Dan is a true supporter of catch and release, but after nearly half an hour trying to bring it to the net he then spent twenty minutes try to revive the fish which had taken the fly deep in the throat, sadly he did not succeed

    1. That may be so but this calls into question whether the lake should be open in Oct or indeed Sept
Catch and release must be mandatory for all trout

  5. Are u having a laugh, close the lake, the gillies are like our politicians, pure greed, it was them who pushed for the lake to remain open in October.

The first step is to admit you have a problem and it seems that the Trust has woken up.
