                    Lough Currane today

21/1/21 In today’s action, there were 3 boats out, 2 brown tag boats, 1 barbless hood boat, few kelts to report. Again, it is sad to see the lake so quiet and I can tell you Appleby, there’s 1 barbless hook angler who is very upset he wasn’t given a brown tag, he’s says some of the brown tag recipients haven’t even launched their boats yet, fisheries have got this all wrong, due to Covid he feels all local and regular local anglers should have got tags, considering the 5 km travel is in place for a few more months.

20/1/21 Today’s report come from a barbless Currane angler, 4 boats on the lake today, 1 barbless boat stayed out all day, 3 brown tag boats that were out, 2 of them just out for 2 hours, the other brown tag boat just out for the bare hour, few kelts to report, sad to see such little effort being put in and for a matter of interest where were the other 12 Brown Tag Anglers.

 19/1/21 It is sad to see that again there were no traditional local Brown Tag anglers on this 3^rd day of the Brown Tag Spring fishing. So, let us get the opinion of local angler Mr. Brod O’Sullivan, Its all yours Brod, well Vince I have been getting my Salmon Licence for 65 years and I didn’t get a Brown Tag and it will be the first time in my life that I won’t be able to reminisce going down the North Shore in January and February and yes I’m in my eighties but in fishing terms I still feel I’m in my twenty’s and in a way I feel Discriminated that I didn’t get a tag and I’m sure there are much younger local anglers than me that feel the same, all I can hope is I get a Brown Tag in March. Talking of Younger anglers, local angler Mike also makes his point, its all yours Mike, False data from a fish counter that has never worked properly has caused our lake to be empty today, I feel anglers are being treated like criminals, begging for brown tags to be able to fish a lake that we have been on since we were young boys, how can you have proper figures when the counter was off so many times, never cleaned properly and has a pass that has no counter, it’s a shame to see what’s going on based on lies

18/1/20 There were no boats out today to the best of my knowledge and I can’t check the Big Lake because I’m outside the 5 kilometres and I have no intention of being caught by the local Garda and being tagged, talking of tags, back to the fishing, on yesterdays report I had a comment made to me by Currane fly angler Mr. Gary Winston Humphrey and I quote, are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the Spring Fishing, sad times.

17/1/21 Well its great to be back on the No Spin No Fly’s just Facts zone. so, let us go to the new and heart breaking and reality of Brown tags spring fishing on the Currane system and as you can imagine this was the main talk on this opening day, some Gillies were smiling because their boat was Brown tagged as they trolled the Currane waters, for the unlucky Gillies who were not so lucky in the draw got their plier’s and files out and then headed out to the catch and release department. Well Brown tag or no Brown tags I can say both failed this opening day. Just for the record there were 9 boats out, six Brown Tags Boats and 3 C&R Boats and where the other 9 tags were, I could not tell you. Wind, well in my opinion it was coming from the Currane anglers and could you blame them, plus it was overcast this Grey day.

 Happy New Year to Waterville and the Currane Anglers. 

In advance of the new season can I encourage all anglers to join our local fishing club Currane Fisheries more than ever we need to pull together to support the work of our club who among other things run the salmon hatchery, clean the spawning streams, and control the fishing on the upper lakes. With a lack of tourist anglers’ revenue has been severely impacted. Memberships are available from The Mace Store in Waterville at €100.

Attention Salmon Anglers

Brown Tags for Salmon fishing Spring 2021.

 

From 17 January to midnight of 11 May 2021 Brown Tag regulations will be in place for the Currane Catchment.

There is an allocation of 39 Brown Tags for this period.

 

Any angler not in possession of a Brown Tag must fish Single Barbless Hooks, No Worms and follow Catch and Release procedures. A Salmon cannot be taken unless the angler is in possession of a Brown Tag. If a Salmon is taken both a Blue and Brown Tag must be affixed to the fish.

 

Failure to do so may result in penalties.

 

Distribution of Brown Tags.

15 Tags.

On 10 January 2021 a draw will take place in Waterville . Any angler wanting to be considered for this draw must have applied to the email address below with Name, Contact details, and a 2021 Salmon License number, by 5pm on 08 January 2021.  Watervillebrowntag2021@fisheriesireland.ie.

 

15 Tags.

On 07 March 2021 a draw will take place in Waterville. Any angler wanting to be considered for this draw must have applied to the email address below with Name, Contact details, and a 2021 Salmon License number, by 5pm on 05 March 2021.  Watervillebrowntag2021@fisheriesireland.ie.

 

9 Tags

On 11 April 2021 a draw will take place in Waterville. Any angler wanting to be considered for this draw must have applied to email address below with Name, Contact details, and a 2021 Salmon License number, by 5pm on 09 April 2021.   Watervillebrowntag2021@fisheriesireland.ie.

 

 

Application rules for a Brown Tag;

 

An Angler must be in possession of a current Salmon License and have their Name, Contact details and 2021 Salmon license number submitted to the email address below by the relevant date.

 

A draw will be made by IFI staff, with independent witnesses and any angler whose name is called will receive a Brown Tag. 5 reserves names will be drawn in case initial offer of a Tag is not taken.

 

Once an angler has received a Brown Tag, they are not eligible for entry in another draw.
