29/4/20 No reports of any boats out. Wind West and then went flat calm, followed by light to heavy rain this afternoon and this evening believe it or not the temperature fell dramatically as snow fell on the high ground just outside Waterville. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 12.4 centigrade.  Now we head for memories past on Waterville Lake. By UK Currane Angler Ian Scofield.
 Hello Vincent, I see the Yorkshire judge had a second memory so I thought this Devon judge might have a go! This is about an old ghillie Mick Donnelly Here goes. I first visited Currane in 1967 and have been staying at Raheen every year since. I was privileged to get to know Mick and Bridie Donnelly who used to live at Raheen and brought up their family there. Mick was one of the old ghillies from pre-war and he would talk of the days before engines were allowed. The boats were wooden, very heavy with heavy wooden oars. In a big NW blowing, there were two ghillie's on the oars with a privileged angler in the stern. Bridie told me she would watch the lake and fear for Mick's health and safety. I once asked Mick if he could swim, and he said "yes, to the bottom" No life jackets of course I was lucky to spend a few days with him on the lake in his mid-80's after he retired. His knowledge of the lake was legendary. He retained his interest in rowing and I can see him now, Guinness in hand watching the rowers at the Valentia regatta. Mick and Bridie are long gone but they are fondly remembered.

Memories on

Lough Currane

28/4/20 All quiet on all fronts. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13.2 centigrade. On that note we head for memories past on Waterville Lake. Today’s story is by Currane and French angler, Michel Allonsius. Hello Vincent. During the month of May 2018, I was fishing on a boat accompanied by Dominic my ghillie. In the afternoon Dominic showed me the manifestation of salmon. Immediately I launched my fly and after a few moments I took a salmon that was hanging. A few minutes later another salmon caught the fly and the battle could begin. The sequence was filmed because I had started the shooting which I attach. I see this sequence of France again because I was deprived of a trip in 2020 which allows me to get back into the atmosphere of the lake which left me with exceptionally good memories. Kinds regard. Tom and the Judges C&R Salmon

hope that all is well with you and all our friends in Waterville in these troubled times. Your subscribers seem to be reluctant to write to you about their experiences and so, if you do not mind, I thought I would share another with you. For years Tom O'Shea had been trying to persuade me to come to Currane in the spring to have a go at trying to catch a springer. Whilst telling me how much I would enjoy it he would always emphasise how difficult they were to catch, particularly as I refuse to troll. Finally, last year I decided to have a go. On the first day I travelled down from Adare and arrived at Waterville mid-morning. My fly rod was set up and out on the Lough we went. Tom took me to the first drift alongside the Derby. As I settled down with my double handed rod I jokingly said, "I'd best make sure that I don't peak too early". No sooner were the words out of my mouth then a salmon took my fly. Having landed and released the fish I could not help but say to Tom "I thought you said this should be difficult" Needless to say that was the last fish we saw for the rest of the week! 26/4/20 The wind was in the North but sadly the Currane anglers did not journey forth, so as you can see I haven’t anything to report. Wind as already stated and overcast. Today’s story of Memories past on Lough Currane, is by UK Angler Mr. Ian Scofield

On the April 2^nd, 2011 I was with my friend Richard Haigh and fishing out of Raheen Cottage, our Ghillie was Sylvester Donnelly. We Caught a 10 lb Salmon on the troll, but the big story of our trip however was the big salmon, which was returned because of this, it could not be officially recorded. The anglers concerned were sensible honest people and I am sure their story was truthful. The expert who assessed the weight from measurements was Chris Mills who was qualified in Marine Biology, used to manage the Burrishoole fishery in Newport Co Mayo. He thought the fish would have been in excess of 35 pounds and made our Salmon sound small. Really enjoy your Blog. Best Wishes Ian Scofield.
